01 / THE IDEA

Not a uniform look—
the right form for each message

Every brief, audience, and message is different. KUMIHAN|Rytmi helps AI shape typography, spacing, and hierarchy around the meaning and priorities of each piece—rather than applying one template to everything. In Finnish, that starts by asking whether text is to be read in sequence, acted on in an interface, or seen as a heading, logo or poster—and finding the rhythm, rytmi, that suits it.

02 / WHAT MATTERS

Four things worth getting right

Practical priorities for creating and reviewing Finnish content.

01 / TYPE

Finnish typography

Ä, ö and å are letters of the Finnish alphabet, not decorated a and o, so their dots and ring are never dropped or replaced—not even in all-caps headings or logos. Doubling changes meaning—tuli, tulli and tuuli are fire, customs and wind—so letters are never merged or tracked so tightly that they blur. Long compounds and case endings, as in verkkokauppa and EU:ssa, belong to the word: buttons and labels get room instead of the word being cut.

02 / STRUCTURE

Purposeful structure

Shape the layout around the information, its priority, and the reader’s goal. Body text, interface text, figures and display type—headings, logos, posters—are handled differently: in the research, the public Suomi.fi design system keeps body text at 18 px on small screens while its H1 shrinks from 40 to 32 px. Line-end hyphenation prefers the boundary inside a compound—verkko-kauppa—and is not switched on everywhere without a verified dictionary.

03 / FIDELITY

Source fidelity

Protect names, quotations, numbers, dates, codes and intended meaning. Finnish quotations usually open and close with the same mark, ”…”, and are not converted to English-style “…”. 1 234,50 keeps its space and decimal comma, 18,90 € and 20 % their spaces, 21.10.2026 and klo 10.30 their full stops, and EU:ssa or 20 %:n stay unbroken after the colon. Moving between standard written Finnish, colloquial forms and selkokieli (Easy Finnish) is an edit: recorded as a proposal, never made silently.

04 / REVIEW

Read-only review

Check finished work and organize issues—without touching the files. A hyphens declaration is no proof that Finnish was hyphenated correctly, so the rendered result is checked browser by browser. Long words are tested in inflected forms at 320 CSS px and 200% zoom, and essential details—dates, prices, venues—never rely on decorative or image-only type.

DESIGNED FOR THE MESSAGE

Beyond arranging type
Design the reading experience

KUMIHAN|Rytmi doesn't dictate a finished look. It gives AI the knowledge to adapt to each medium and brief. There is no single “Finnish” typeface or Nordic-minimal formula: Fraktur gave way to Antiqua gradually, and today public interfaces, newspapers, hand-lettered festival identities and brand letters drawn from old shop signs coexist. Typefaces are compared by Text or Headline design, weight, width, version and licence.
