Natural Norwegian typography,

01 / THE IDEA

Not a uniform look—
the right form for each message

Every brief, audience, and message is different. KUMIHAN|Samklang helps AI shape typography, spacing, and hierarchy around the meaning and priorities of each piece—rather than applying one template to everything. In Norwegian, that starts by settling the written standard, Bokmål or Nynorsk, and asking whether each region is text to be read, an interface to use, or lettering seen as an image—and then bringing them into samklang, harmony.

02 / WHAT MATTERS

Four things worth getting right

Practical priorities for creating and reviewing Norwegian content.

01 / TYPE

Norwegian typography

Bokmål and Nynorsk are two equal written standards. The tag no is valid, but the standard is confirmed before standard-specific advice, accepted variants are not treated as errors, and text is never translated from one standard into the other. Æ, Ø and Å are letters of their own, sorted after Z, and accents and a person’s own Aa spelling are kept. Long compounds are written as one word, and hyphenation is tested separately for each standard with the actual dictionary.

02 / STRUCTURE

Purposeful structure

Shape the layout around the information, its priority, and the reader’s goal. Reading text, interfaces and expressive copy are decided role by role, and a heading’s visual size is kept apart from its semantic level. In the research, NAV’s published values pair 18 px text with a 28 px line height for long text and 24 px for short text; a theatre’s heavy condensed titles are no model for body text or terms of purchase.

03 / FIDELITY

Source fidelity

Preserve names, quotations, historical spelling, numbers, codes and URLs. «…» is common but not the only quotation style; a spaced en dash marks an insertion while a range such as 2022–2026 has none; a list usually takes no comma before og, and genitives take no English ’s. 12 %, 20 °C and 21. oktober 2026 are reviewed in context, and 09.05 is not interpreted without knowing the field. Rewording is a separate proposal—never a silent edit.

04 / REVIEW

Read-only review

Check finished work and organize issues—without touching the files. The source’s SHA-256 is recorded, findings cite their rule and source, and checks that were not run are reported as not checked. ÆØÅ, accents and combining marks are tested in the chosen and fallback fonts, and text must hold up under 200 percent enlargement and the user’s own text spacing.

DESIGNED FOR THE MESSAGE

Beyond arranging type
Design the reading experience

KUMIHAN|Samklang doesn't dictate a finished look. It gives AI the knowledge to adapt to each medium and brief. Norwegian design is not one national typeface or one body size: a Nynorsk publisher’s quiet serif, a mountain festival’s condensed headlines and a theatre’s heavy display titles sit beside the plain sans serifs of public services. Typefaces are compared by role, coverage of ÆØÅ and accents, and licence—no fonts are bundled.
